Sunpower Solar Panels X Series

Burning Stuff With 2000F Solar Power!!

In a previous project I found a free tv and turned it into a giant solar scorcher. This shoots out a deadly beam of sunlight, that's hot enough to abuse food, melt metal and burn things you probably shouldn't. Today seemed like a good day to play with my Solar Scorcher. I positioned my frame and found the focal point, then added some concrete tiles as a base for my projects. Ok, I've got power, and I'll test it out with this piece of wood and when the light makes contact.

I've got instant fire. The sunlight at this spot is around 2000 degrees Fahrenheit, enough to melt this spot of concrete into a glowing orange liquid. I'm curious to see what I can do with all this heat so I've filled a glass bottle with water and I'll punch a hole in the cap. It's incredible to see that the instant I focus my lens on the bottle, it starts smoking. Just a few moments later this water is so hot it's boiling, and I'm a little nervous the bottle might blow. Yep, there it goes. The glass pieces are melting and that's cool,.

But now I want to try this on some food. I'll get some hot dogs, and when they hit the beam they really do get hot. This might be a little well done for my taste, and I'm still hungry so let's try an egg. The egg is actually working very well. It's so reflective it doesn't burn as fast, and even my wife is interested. A little salt and pepper and it's tempting to try a bite. Ok, so I wasn't actually expecting to eat this, but it looks safe enough, and.

Even my kids are anxious to try. Surprisingly, it's pretty good. Alright, let's see what else this will do. I'll try burning a penny, and, wow, it melted. How about a stack of pennies Yep, they're nothing but liquid metal now, and I'm thinking that slag in the mixture must be what's left of the copper coating. It's only taking about 4 seconds to melt these, and melting metal is really great, but now I want to see something burst. I wonder what would happen to this egg It's spewing some kind of debris and smoking like crazy. I hear.

Some little pops and it's even forming some interesting growths. huh, Look at that. But no explosion. How about if I put a pop top on this bottle of water and let the pressure build up Yeah, that's what I'm looking for. Let's do that again. The lid is back on, and pressure is building. Awesome! Alright, the sun is setting and I've readjusted my Aframe. I'm just wondering if this would ignite gasoline. It does. Hopefully it goes without saying that this is very dangerous and you shouldn't try this at home. Well, I'm convinced there's.

An insane amount of power behind these lenses. If you'd like to see where I got this one, take a look at my tutorial on how I hacked it out of an old TV. This one boiled water in less than a minute, welded a nickel to concrete, and instantly torched any piece of wood in it's way. Well that was fun, but I'm still hungry so I'll put everything away and go get some real home cooking. That's it for now. If you liked this project, perhaps you'll like some of my others. Are Solar Panels Going To 300 Watts Soon

Right now solar panels are around the 200 watt range. Are they ever Going To 300 Watts is a question I asked John Shaw project engineer of Bella Energy. Absolutely, any manufacturer can do that right now. You shouldn't really look at how many watts a panel has rather how many watts per square foot can be attained. Behind you is a Sanyo 200, if you increase the foot print of that panel by 50 it is a 300 watt panel. The reality is what you need to be looking at to measure the level of progress of the.

Technology is how many watts per square foot. Instead of thinking will there ever be a 300 watt panel surely there will be even next year. To get at the point of your question is do you ever think we will be ever to achieve a 300 watt panel in 15 square feet And yes, I do. Right now standard efficiency panels are in the ballpark of about 12 watts per square foot, it ranges from 10 to 13. Standard efficiency panels Evergreens, Sharps, Kyocera, Shot , Suntech etc. Keep in mind this is the residential affordable panels, NASA works with panels that are about.

30 watts per square foot but you are talking a million bucks a panel. Then there are high efficiency panels of the ones we know of are SunPower and Sanyo. And Sunpower and Sanyo are approximately 15 watts per square foot. Both are very good products. Sanyo I believe has a little bit of an edge because they has an amorphous or thin film rap around the silicon cell which allows them to maintain high production in high heat. One more reason and I will tie this in. The Sanyo's are shipped with a minus 0 and a plus 5 percent so when you buy a 200 watt.

Sanyo panel you will get hypothetically in standard test conditions 75 degrees at sea level you will get 200 watts or up to 210 watts. All other panels including specifically Sunpower are or 5, so you could buy a 210 watt Sunpower cell and it could actually perform at 199 watts where you could buy a 200 watt Sanyo cell it could perform at 210 watts, but no less than 200 watts. So that and the fact the Sanyo's will out perform Sunpower apples to apples same azimuth and pitch in high heat because of this amorphous or thin film rap 10 in high heat peak days.

VISIONS CTRLP Australias Largest Solar Cells

Melbourne researchers have successfully created Australia's largest and most flexible solar cells, with the aid of a new printer located at CSIRO. The scientists are part of a collaboration between research and industry partners called the Victorian Organic Solar Cell Consortium VICOSC. This was achieved through the collaboration between The University of Melbourne and the Bio21 Institute, CSIRO, Monash University and industry partners including Bluescope Steel and security printing firm Innovia Security. In just three years the consortium has gone from making cells the size of a fingernail, to cells 10 centimetres square.

They are now able to print organic photovoltaic cells the size of an A3 sheet of paper. The consortium is now leading the world in the ability to print solar cells and using different printing technologies, but this is the beginning of the story. We're still developing the technologies, still developing the materials to enable us to print in a number of different ways for different applications. The new printer can roll out 10 metres of solar cells per minute, which is equivalent to producing one cell every two seconds. Using semiconducting inks, the researchers print the cells.

Straight onto paperthin flexible plastic or steel. So what we're looking at is, how can we use this technology in the short term, how can we print solar cells to enable advertising, can we put solar cells on to advertising material in shopping centres to drive an active display. So if somebody wants to advertise something with nice flashing lights then at the moment they drive that with batteries. In the longer term we see these materials being able to be coated on to buildings, into windows and on roofs to provide.

Power in a wide variety of locations and circumstances. As part of the consortium, graduate students working alongside scientists are involved in training and development programs to improve the technology in the long term. We're now right up there with the rest of the people in the world but we've also got a facility which is different. We now have a process through our collaboration where we take things from the very very beginning, from designing materials, from making devices in the lab scale right through the large scale printing, which is very very unusual in the world context.

SolarCity Unveils Worlds Most Efficient Rooftop Solar Panel with more than 22 Module Efficiency.

The Sun provides endless energy, but the average solar cell panel can convert only 14 to 20 of the energy it collects into usable electricity. Now, American energy company SolarCity has built the world's most efficient rooftop solar panel, with a module efficiency exceeding 22 percent. The new SolarCity panel generates more power per square foot and harvests more energy over a year than any other rooftop panel in production, and will be the highest volume solar panel manufactured in the Western Hemisphere. SolarCity will begin producing the first modules in small quantities this month at its 100.

MW pilot facility, but the majority of the new solar panels will ultimately be produced at SolarCity's 1 GW facility in Buffalo, New York. SolarCity expects to be producing between 9,000 10,000 solar panels each day with similar efficiency when the Buffalo facility reaches full capacity. SolarCity's panel was measured with 22.04 percent modulelevel efficiency by Renewable Energy Test Center, a thirdparty certification testing provider for photovoltaic and renewable energy products. SolarCity's new panel is created via a proprietary process that significantly reduces the manufacturing cost relative to other highefficiency technologies, and it.

How to Install Solar Panels Wiring for Solar Panels

Alright! We've got the panels mounted and now we're ready to connect the wiring that brings the power down to our charge controller which is located on the ground. We're going to be using this BX style wire which is just twelve gage wire with a wrapping of sturdy aluminum on the outside to protect it from the elements. Typically used in household wiring, pretty common at your home improvement center, twelve gage is adequate for a small system like this. Black wire for our positive connection, the white wire will be negative.

It's also called the neutral in an AC system. But for this we can use the white wire as negative, and then the green will go to our frame as a ground. So, we'll just strip a little bit of wire off here. We've got our DC wires already marked coming from the panels. Red, positive and white is negative. So we'll follow that here, again, and strip these wires down. Special wiring comes out of these panels. It's USE rated versus THHN for instance. And this USE wire is UV stabilized so it can actually be out in the sunlight for many years without.

Degrading. We're using the shielded wire here could be in different styles of conduit or even a UV rated wire for a small installation like this. And your bigger grid type connections, all this can be in conduit and the wire choices would be a little more limited because of the high voltages concerned. But here, twelve to forty volts, we're not really as concerned with that as we might be. Still, it's nice to have everything solid. We're going to use our linesmen pliers here to get a nice solid twist on our positive wires and a little wire nut on top of that, snug.

It down. We've got our negative wire here, and you notice I didn't strip these both at the same time. Even through it's only 40 volts, you can still get a pretty decent shock off of these panels. So, it pays to keep the wires separate. In fact, at the other end here, we're not quite ready to make this connection, we should connect down at the bottom first before making this wire completely hot, just for safety. So now, let's leave this for a moment and go down and wire up our charge controller here in the laundry room.
