There's nothing like a quick trip to Vegas, in the middle of the week. Like millions of other Americans, we come to this beautiful city for the sights and for the sounds, and today we come for the sun. Right now we are standing near the largest solar electric plant of its kind in the entire Western Hemisphere. The entire Western hemisphere! More than 72,000 solar panels built on part of an old landfill, provide 25 of the electricity for the 12,000 people who live and work here at Nellis. That is the equivalent of powering.
About 13,200 homes during the day. It's a project that took about half a year to complete, created 200 jobs and will save the U.S. Air Force, which is largest consumer of energy in the federal government nearly one million dollars a year. It will also reduce harmful carbon pollution by 24,000 tons per year which is equivalent of removing 4000 cars from our roads. Most importantly, this base serves as a shining example of what's possible when we harness the power of clean, renewable energy to build a new, firmer foundation.

We are not a secure nation until we lessen our dependence on foreign oil. After four months of this administration, and 100 days of this recovery act, we have carved out a path toward progress it's a path that begins in places just like this air force base, where ordinary citizens tap into their sense of innovation and ingenuity to reinvent the world around them. This place has been known as the home of fighter pilot. Now it's the home of the largest solar energy installation of its kind of the Western Hemisphere.

MIKE WARD The modern view on sustainability within IKEA, we've identified three change drivers, and one of those change drivers is energy independence and resource independence for the future. We had a program a few years ago that we called IKEA Goes Renewable, and that was meant to sort of get us kick started. So far, we've been able to achieve the step that 50 of our energy use is from renewable sources. I'm talking about globally now. We want to get to 70 by 2015, and by 2020, we actually want.
To produce more energy from renewable sources than we consume in the total operation. In the short term, of course it helps us reduce our carbon footprint, it helps us save cost. We have 38 stores in the US, and at the moment, we have 35 who are fitted with solar installations and one that has a geothermal installation. What is it actually used for It's for everything from refrigeration in our Swedish food markets, running our cash registers, charging the fork lifts, lighting the building. The stores are pretty big operations.
There's a lot going on, and we use it for all of those uses. I mean, you name it, it helps. What we've done so far is equal to 38 megawatts. If you translate that to something easy to understand, it can power 90,000 homes. We've always been extremely economical in our use of resources. The reason is because in order to deliver low prices, you have to be very, very efficient, so that sits in our DNA. We know that sense we put these installations on our roofs, we spend less on energy and that's proven, so we're.
Retrofitting Net Zero Turning Existing Homes into Net Zero Homes
Here at Halco we do what's called Retrofit NetZero and what we mean by that is we're taking existing old homes, sometimes homes from the 1800s and, what we're able to do is, we're able to first of all, come in a do a home energy evaluation and we're able to tighten up that home through all of our different methods of insulation and air sealing and all the different products and services we offer. We're able to tighten that home right down just like it was a new home. And then from there we introduce renewable.
Energy. And so we will come in and very typically use geothermal taking the energy from the earth, and we''ll make all the heating, the air conditioning, and how water with geothermal, then will pair the geothermal up with either solar or wind to make the electricity. Either the solar or the wind will make all of the power for the geothermal plus the baseload electricity to run the lights and such, and at the end of the day the people have no energy bill ever again. And what we call that is retrofit net zero.

I was tired of paying so much for electricity, so I decided to generate my own. Hi. My name is Marcio Pugina, and this is my invention the GEN. It's an electrical generator that combines wind and solar technology into one compact unit. For over 2 years, I've generated about 50 of my own electricity, and I'm working on a newer model that will generate up to 70. The first month after we set it up, I got the power bill in the mail, and I was shocked. It was cut in half. I was so excited I called my husband right away. He thought I had won the lottery or something.
We are excited about the GEN, and we want to make it affordable for everyone. Our goal is to offer the improved model for 6000 dollars. Depending on where you live, you can actually get back enough tax and energy credits so that you end up paying nothing. Let's say that where you live, the GEN still costs you 3000 dollars. Compare that to the alternatives. Even after tax and energy credits, solar panels on half your roof would cost 20,000 dollars, and a windmill would cost 30,000. Now let's say you spend $150 per month on electricity. This is the average American.
Electric bill. And if you produce 50 of your own electricity, you save 75 dollars per month. At this rate, the solar panels would take approximately 22 years to pay off. With an average lifespan of 25 years, the solar panels give you only 3 years of free energy. The windmill would take about 33 years to pay off. With an average lifespan of 20 years, a windmill would never pay for itself. The GEN, on the other hand, would take only about 3 years to pay off. With an average.
Lifespan of 20 years, that gives you up to 17 years of free energy! Not only does the GEN make financial sense, it helps you become selfsufficient and better prepared in the case of a natural disaster or power outage. Plus it's safe for the environment. From day one has been done in an energy efficient way. This program specifically caught my eye, renewable energy, because of just the different areas we would get into. I thought I would've been working on solar panels all the time but now they brought in wind, they brought in geothermal so they bring in all these different courses and they all try to bring them into one thing. This room here has the solar panels, which the students work on all the time, and next door is the wind tunnel.
So we actually created our own wind turbines. My friends and family have been really supportive of my decision to go back to school and they're very proud of me that I've been dedicated to the program for the last two years. Every teacher will teach you exactly what you need to know, there's nothing that you need to bring together. You just need to have your own common sense to bring and you're ready.
