Andrew Halls Stirling Engine Boat

.that bit should be hot you can run a mechanical pump on the engine but it only pumps when the engine's running I quite like to get the cooling going before there's any heat around so I've got a very small electrical pump in the seacock over there but I've got the water flowing and I will now check everything is off to start with I've got some pressure I shall turn the gas on at the source I've got a bit of crosswind at the moment so my little lighter might get blown out.

But I shall try and get a flame oh, I've got a flame eh, that was well behaved sometimes they go pop have I got a flame I think I've got a flame But I can't see anything. it's ignited this one is usually the one that misbehaves and it pops like that I've got a flame. Hooray! And that just acts as a cooker, does it Yes, it is a gas hob I've got three of them and, um life is less busy if you've only got one of them.

Solar Power Beats Rising Electricity Prices!

Making News Today! Miranda Kerr Orlando Bloom Split! Ohhhh! Been reading the news lately What a surprise that power prices make the headlines again! Here's an article I found in The Advertiser on Wednesday, page 18. Power prices are on the way up again! The article says that we can expect to pay another $200 a year on our power bills. Haaa, well what great news! But what there's more... four days later the same newspaper reports, front page headline, 'Power Bill Relief'. Well finally! The article says we can expect to save $50 a year on our power bills... ooohhh... over.

The next 3 years, that's right, over the next 3 years! Are you kidding me Our power bills go up $200 on Wednesday and they come down $50 on Saturday. I don't know about your maths but my maths says we're still... OUT OF POCKET! Meanwhile all the politicians do is talk, talk, talk, talk, talk about reducing electricity prices. So why DO power prices keep going up Because a large portion of your bill is going to network charges, things like new infrastructure, power lines and expanding the network. None of which are subject to market forces. Plus.

Most power companies are monopolies which means they don't have to help us if they can charge us first! If this pizza was your electricity bill, then this portion would be your network charges. And this part of your bill can go up every year and there's nothing you can do about it. So even if these guys ever manage to get us any kind of relief on our power bills, it's only ever going to be on a small portion of the bill. So what can YOU do to take control today.

Plants vs Solar Panels Which is better at capturing solar energy AtBristol Science Centre

This is an aquatic plant called pondweed, and we can see that it's making tiny bubbles of gas. This gas is oxygen and all plants produce it in a process called photosynthesis. The word photosynthesis comes from the Greek meaning light' and putting together'. Plants use the energy in sunlight to make sugars, out of the simple ingredients of carbon dioxide and water. And do you remember those bubbles of gas we saw earlier Well. deep breath they're pretty useful. To make the sugar, or glucose, the bonds which hold the molecules together.

Have to be broken apart and rearranged. The bonds are made of electrons. So the water needs to lose electrons, and the carbon dioxide has to gain electrons. And the colour of leaves gives us a clue to what is responsible for this rearrangement of electrons. Every leaf cell contains a pigment called chlorophyll'. It's the chlorophyll which makes the leaves green and helps make photosynthesis happen. Chlorophyll has the amazing ability to release electrons when exposed to sunlight. The electrons from the chlorophyll are replaced by splitting apart water into ions of hydrogen and oxygen.

The excess oxygen is then released into the air. The flow of electrons from the chlorophyll is then used with the remaining hydrogen ions to produce the energy needed to synthesise glucose from molecules of carbon dioxide. So sunlight provides the energy we need to move electrons from one molecule to another turning light energy into chemical energy ready for our plant to use. But can we do the same thing artificially How does photosynthesis compare to a solar panel Well, solar panels like those on the Energy Tree.

Use light as an energy source, and they also generate a flow of electrons. But they don't store chemical energy they convert light energy into electrical energy. They do this by using something called the photoelectric effect'. When photons come and hit a metal surface, they knock off electrons. We then capture and store these electrons. These photovoltaic cells are made of a silicon crystal. But silicon is a poor conductor of electricity. So impurities are added to help. This creates something called a 'semiconductor'. As light hits the surface, electrons are knocked loose.

The electrons then flow from areas with a high concentration, to areas with a low concentration. It's this flow of electrons which generates an electric current. We've done this on a big scale on our roof. We have 560 square metres of solar panels, which generate 47,000 kilowatt hours of electricity per year. So which is better, leaves or solar panels How efficient is each system at transforming the energy from sunlight Well, a leaf can turn only three percent of light energy hitting its surface into chemical energy through photosynthesis.

Whereas, a solar panel of the same area can turn roughly ten percent of the light energy into electrical energy that's over three times more efficient! But it's not quite as simple as that. There's all sorts of other things to take into account as well. Such as the time of day, the location, types of plant, and transport and storage costs on the other side as well. Solar panels may be able to absorb more wavelengths of light than leaves, but leaves can grow and repair when damaged. The Energy Tree may be able to charge your phone,.

During winters we wear dark clothes because they absorb a lot more heat. to do this experiment take two aluminium cans. one colored black and the other should be shiny aluminium. now fill both the cans with same amount of water. fill both the cans to the to. then take two thermometers and place one in each can and measure initial temperature of the water. then keep these cans in the sun outside for almost 3 hours. after 3 hours you will be surprised that the temperature of the black can would have risen by 6.5 degrees. which.

Physical Science Green Energy Costs

Hi I'm Steve Jones and I'm going to tell you a little of the costs of green energy. Although the energy itself is free that is the sunlight is free we don't have to pay to stand in the sunlight, these forms of energy do require infrastructure. If you think of Geothermal energy, energy from, within the earth this energy requires large wells digging and those wells down which we pump water and from which we get hot water, that is a large amount of infrastructure. And we have to take that energy to towns. So we need big pipes, we need lots.

Of water and so forth. This is the cost of Geothermal energy, although the energy itself is free. Biomass is the same. If we want to produce Biomass we have to grow the plant. We have to buy the seeds. We have to prepare the ground. We have to harvest it, we have to transport it to where it's going to be processed. And then we have to have a facility to turn it into energy. So when we talk about diesel from Biomass it does have a cost. Although again the sun that makes the plants grow is free. Hydroelectric power, is very effective.

And we get massive amounts of electricity but I can't see us building a dam on the cheap. These are huge construction projects, they require roads and infrastructure and towns and hundred of thousands of people to run them. So hydroelectric power although the actual energy is free, because it's the sun's energy moving the water and the water cycle. The actual cost is the cost of the infrastructure creating the electricity from the hydroelectric power. Wind energy is also the same. The infrastructure is needed. The tall tower, the turbines and.

Getting the energy to people. So it is free, the wind we don't pay for but we pay for the infrastructure. Finally solar energy must be one of the most expensive of all these renewable sources because silicone and the related chemicals and structure are very expensive to produce. And therefore solar cells probably every fifteen years you've got to replace them and it probably takes about fifteen years to pay the cost of producing them. So overall solar energy is actually quite an expensive form of free energy. So although the energy.

Solar Panel Offers Bowling Green, KY

Solar energy has just start here in Kentucky but us installing on the system's. We started this company in 2009 Some of the common questions we get. Is solar affordable, does it work in our area, Do we have enough son. and answer to all those questions is Yes We use Sun Power Panels from rooftops to ground mount. Percy and pay back on the system is lowest. Four years is a very short term investment for a product this warranty for 25 years. You own your house why do you rancher your power.

Supercritical solar steam

Music playing Music playing Mike Collins Solar thermal energy works by concentrating sunlight using mirrors. The light is then shone up on top of the tower where there's a solar receiver and in that receiver there's a panel of tubes which steam is flowing inside. That steam is heated to high temperatures and then it flows back down the tower to a turbine at the bottom of the tower, a steam turbine. The steam flowing through that turbine spins the generator to generate electricity. Robbie McNaughton The temperatures that we've obtained are over.

550 degrees and at pressures above 24 mega Pascals. This is called supercritical steam generation and it's a state where steam actually transforms without boiling. The steam conditions that we've achieved are comparable to what is running at the moment in fossil fuel power stations. So we're able to actually either displace the steam that goes into these, reducing the fossil fuel reliance, or in some cases maybe even replace fossil fuel completely. It's really exciting to work on these types of projects. Doing a world first is always exciting but in this case what we've actually been able to do.
