Solar Jobs Up for Grabs at PGESponsored Fair in San Francisco
These recent college graduates want to work in the solar industry so badly that they took a Greyhound bus from Los Angeles to the Bay Area. Their destination PGE's Pacific Energy Center in San Francisco, where the utility partnered with the nonprofit GRID Alternatives on a solar job fair. Their goals were simple. A whole bunch of connections and potentially fulltime employment. Job seekers mingled, were offered professional photos for social network profiles, practiced interviewing and got feedback on their resumes. The job fair the utility's third in as many years is just one.
Of the many ways PGE shows its commitment to solar. And it makes sense. PGE's service area has 25 percent of the nation's solar customers. That's more than anywhere else in the country. What's exciting about solar is that there's really a lot of opportunity and, not all opportunities that require advanced educations. What they do require is experience the ability to kind of hit the ground running. And, so what GRID Alternatives does, with support from PGE, is to make sure that folks who want to get that experience can get that.
Experience. Later, PGE presented GRID Alternatives with a $100,000 check to ensure solar is reaching underserved communities in Northern and Central California. Our goal at PGE is to ensure that we can support customer choice and solar growth. But, that's not just for customers who can afford, on their own, to choose solar as an option. GRID Alternatives has been a great partner for us for the last ten years because they've been focused on underserved communities, communities of color, and really building out solar to customers that wouldn't otherwise necessarily have the.
Means to do it on their own. PGE's partnership with GRID Alternatives has resulted in 60 million dollars in energy savings. Local officials are praising the work of companies like PGE and nonprofits like GRID Alternatives. When you have public and private partnerships, this is the essence of getting things done. PGE's work also is helping get more people into the job market, and the job fair is one example. After all, it's a growing industry. Solar is growing jobs at a rate 10 times faster than the average economy. So, ten times faster. It's.
Arizonas Rooftop Solar Challenge
Arizona the solar state is proud to be a part of the Sunshot Solar Initiative by the U.S. Department of Energy For Arizona this grant will identify best practices in permitting, finance and zoning. The Rooftop Solar Challenge will drive adoption of an online system in five jurisdictions that allow for over the counter same day permit review. In my case for my solar panel I believe I'm going to have a payback period of about five years and that will give me an additional fifteen to twenty years of free electricity.
Environmental Possibilities Christian White
I live about five miles from the plant, so it takes me about 15 minutes to ride to work on my bike. It's an ecofriendly thing to do and saves a little bit on gas as well. My name is Christian White, I'm a production manager at the Frito Lay plant in Casa Grande, Arizona. We manufacture Cheetos, Fritos, Ruffles, Lays, Tostitos, Santitas, Doritos, Sun Chips and produce about one hundred million pounds of product every day. When I started out at PepsiCo I was in the sales department. I helped stock chips on.
The shelves and deliver products to stores. For the past two years I've been overseeing the conversion of our manufacturing facility to a netzero no waste site. Ultimately it means environmental sustainability. LEED certification is essentially a stamp that says you're a green facility. The exciting part about that is we were the very first manufacturing facility in all of the world to be able to receive that LEED certification from the United States Green Building Council. We have a new technology called membrane bioreactor where water is recycled through a number of different filtration processes to go from.
Being fairly filthy to drinking water quality. We're installing thousands of solar panels. The objective is to be able to power the plant all throughout the year but also to have excess energy that will be put back on the powergrid to be used here in Casa Grande. We have skylights. We use the sun during the day in order to be able to light the plant. We have the offices and the manufacturing areas that are lit by the sun. The ability to lead these projects allows me to be a better father at home. The coolest.
Thing for me is walking through the door and having my two daughters come and give me a big hug and they're sincerely and truly happy to see me. We have a garden in the back yard. We enjoy spending time back there planting flowers, tomatoes, cucumbers. they enjoy watching the seeds grow and being able to eat the plants that we've grown. It feels really good to work for PepsiCo knowing that it's not just about making money, it's about doing the right thing. I get to see the direct results of my work and know that.
3 Cool Things About SolarWorld Solar Panels
Here at the altE Store, we sell several quality brands of solar panels. I wanted to share with you 3 reasons that make SolarWorld brand of solar panels so darn cool. Number 1 SolarWorld has been manufacturing solar panels in the USA for 40 years. They've been making panels in the USA since 1975. Yes, making solar in the USA since 1975, the same year that BIC invented disposable razors, Sony introduced Betamax tutorialtapes, and 'One Flew Over The Cuckoo's Nest' won the Oscar for Best Picture. As of now, in 2015, they employ over 1300 people in America.
That's 1300 jobs in the US clean energy market! Number 2 SolarWorld's solar panels are really strong. Their new version 4 frame provides increased load ratings, reduces the impact of scratches, and drains water faster. As a result, you can mount the solar panels in any orientation, portrait or landscape, and it can withstand a static load of up to 113lbs per square foot. SolarWorld voluntarily puts their panels through extreme tests that go far beyond what is required by international standards. They test for hail, salt spray, snow and wind load. They repeatedly drop a 99pound, leadfilled.
Sack from a height of four feet onto the middle of vertically positioned solar panels. They put their solar panels through extreme temperature fluctuations in order to emulate 25 years of weather changes. In the climate chamber, they cycle from 40 degrees to 185 degrees Fahrenheit. Not just the for required 200 cycles, but 9,125 cycles. Number 3 You get more than you pay for. SolarWorld plus sorts each solar panel off the assembly line. What that means is every single panel gets tested under standard test conditions. They get sorted in 5 watt increments, always rounded down.
So if a panel measures at 264 watts, it will go into the 260 watt bin, it doesn't round up to 265 watts. If it is 269 watts, then it goes into the 265 bin. So you are guaranteed to get at least the rated wattage, not plus or minus, only plus or equal to. Their efficiency has gotten so good, that they are are currently making solar panels of up to 340 watts! SolarWorld solar panels come standard with a 25Year linear power performance guarantee. This guarantees that for 24 years, the solar panels will not lose more than 0.7 of their.
Atheist Congressman Quotes Carl Sagan Instead of Doing Prayer
Interesting piece in the phoenix new times which talks about arizona state representative he's a democrat uh. his name is one mendez he's an atheist and he was asked to deliver an opening prayer in the house of representatives and doing a prayer he talked about the secular humanist tradition and actually quoted carl sagan this is pretty pretty paul and i say he said most prayers in the room begin with a request about your heads i would like to ask that you not bow your heads i would like to ask that you.
Take a moment to look around the room and all of the men and women here in this moment sharing together this extraordinary experience of being alive and of dedicating ourselves to working toward improving the lives of the people in our uh. as you can imagine as as we know based on a lot of old the proposals that come out of arizona there let brett legislature is very happily controlled by religion heavy right wingers yuck so it's particularly interesting for him to to do this and he went on he said.
This is a room in which there are many challenging the debates many moments of tension of ideological division of frustration but this is also a broom whereas my secular humanist humanist tradition stresses by the very fact of being human we have much more in common and we have differences we share the same spectrum of potential for care for compassion for fear for joy for a lot and they went on to call carl sagan same costigan once wrote for small creatures such as we the fastest is bearable only through la i hope today marks the beginning of a.
New era in which arizona's nonbelievers can feel is welcome in valued here believers arizona one of the states that most desperately need some trace of secular humanism don't you think i'm glad no one in that room stood up and shot him well of course they're all very responsible gun owners are no doubt yeah no question about it interesting very very cool story out of uh. arizona let's take a break it dennis campbell's going to be here we of course have to talk about this incredible violent killing that took place place in wall which in uh. the united kingdom.

Imperial Valley Apprentices Hope for Jobs
Imperial Valley leaders hope this is the future. The valley has vast potential to generate solar, geothermal, wind and biomass energy, and with it, thousands of jobs for the region's needy residents. The current unemployment rate here is thirtytwo percent higher than anywhere else in the country. But jobs are on the horizon. Several dozen renewable energy projects are planned for the valley, and construction has already begun on a few of them. These two men are in their first year of a fiveyear electrical apprenticeship. It's one of the few local training programs designed to prepare workers for skilled, wellpaying.
Jobs in the area's budding renewable energies industry. This is the most highpaying job I've had. And I've been working since I was 18 and I'm 24 now. So yeah, this is definitely going to be a career. Besides getting paid for their apprenticeships, students take classes at this training center. It opened in 2009 and is a joint project of the electrical workers union, IBEW, and the national independent contractor's association. Throughout the apprenticeship, basically what you do, you come in two nights a week, during the night, one night is theory and the other night will be lab.
Danny Machain is an organizer for the local electrical workers union. He recruits for the apprenticeship program among local high school and colleges. The first class of apprentices graduated from the center this past June. But there were only three of them, and only one found work in Imperial Valley. Machain said the training program actually stopped accepting new apprentices during half of 2009 and all of 2010 because there simply weren't enough jobs to train them on. We wanted to bring some more people in but again we have a commitment to the industry,.
Which is our partners, and to the State of California that we need to train them on the job for at least so many hours. And without that training, I can provide them five years of school, but again, without that, they don't graduate. But things are looking up. This fall's incoming class of apprentices is the largest yet fifteen people. Current apprentices finishing up the program are hopeful about their job prospects. Ramon Castro is in his final semester of the apprenticeship. He currently works at the water treatment plant in Brawley.
It's started to pick up. I mean, when I first came in, we had some work, we had the schools and whatnot, but it was always iffy if we were going to get onto another project. I was kind of concerned, you know, considering we were going onto unemployment and taking breaks, we want to keep working. And now, I mean just seeing these guys, they're getting picked up. And although I've been on the same job for about 17 months now, I mean I know there's work for me as soon.
As I get out, and it's mainly the big rush out here to catch the solar power, and I know I'm going to be employed, I mean not for sure, not onehundred percent, but I feel confident, I feel good. The apprenticeship program hasn't been easy, Castro says, but he hopes his fellow Imperial Valley residents will make sacrifices, like he has, to prepare for the jobs of the future. I want us to be prepared for when the work comes here, and if it does, and it will, I want us to have the labor force, skilled labor, to take on these jobs so that the work goes.
Google Invests $80M In New Solar Energy Projects
It's no headup display, or a selfdriving car, but Google's latest investment is keeping the future in mind. The company has partnered with investment firm KKR to funnel $80 million into solar energy installations in California and Arizona. Via Fox Business Recurrent Energy is building and maintaining the solar farms, which have a combined capacity of 106 MW enough to power 17,000 homes for a year when they go live. Google says it won't be using any of these 106 MW specifically for its own power needs, though. It's taking a more global view.
These investments are all part of our drive toward a clean energy futurewhere renewable energy is abundant, accessible and affordable. Which isn't to say Google won't see a direct benefit. After all, says GigaOM, the investment stands to make money on the generated electricity. Google can get renewable energy credits to offset its datacenter electricity costs. Softpedia explains Google's playing a long game with this investment. Any increase in the availability of renewable energy plays into Google's plans. The company has a goal of becoming completely carbon neutral, something that it now achieves.
