Melbourne researchers have successfully created Australia's largest and most flexible solar cells, with the aid of a new printer located at CSIRO. The scientists are part of a collaboration between research and industry partners called the Victorian Organic Solar Cell Consortium VICOSC. This was achieved through the collaboration between The University of Melbourne and the Bio21 Institute, CSIRO, Monash University and industry partners including Bluescope Steel and security printing firm Innovia Security. In just three years the consortium has gone from making cells the size of a fingernail, to cells 10 centimetres square.
They are now able to print organic photovoltaic cells the size of an A3 sheet of paper. The consortium is now leading the world in the ability to print solar cells and using different printing technologies, but this is the beginning of the story. We're still developing the technologies, still developing the materials to enable us to print in a number of different ways for different applications. The new printer can roll out 10 metres of solar cells per minute, which is equivalent to producing one cell every two seconds. Using semiconducting inks, the researchers print the cells.
Straight onto paperthin flexible plastic or steel. So what we're looking at is, how can we use this technology in the short term, how can we print solar cells to enable advertising, can we put solar cells on to advertising material in shopping centres to drive an active display. So if somebody wants to advertise something with nice flashing lights then at the moment they drive that with batteries. In the longer term we see these materials being able to be coated on to buildings, into windows and on roofs to provide.
Power in a wide variety of locations and circumstances. As part of the consortium, graduate students working alongside scientists are involved in training and development programs to improve the technology in the long term. We're now right up there with the rest of the people in the world but we've also got a facility which is different. We now have a process through our collaboration where we take things from the very very beginning, from designing materials, from making devices in the lab scale right through the large scale printing, which is very very unusual in the world context.

The Faraday Law of Induction describes how an electromagnet creates a magnetic field. When an electrified coil of wire is wrapped around a metal rod, the metal magnetizes. Similarly, when you pass a magnet THROUGH an unpowered coil of wire, the magnet creates electricity. Physics is awesome.
Researchers at MIT found a way to turn simple physics into a wireless way to transmit electricity using a similar technology to WiFi. By plugging in a resonator to the alternating current outlet in your wall, the device creates a magnetic oscillation. The magnetic field of the resonator is large enough to mingle with nearby coils installed in the walls and floors of your house and ultimately into every device and BOOM wireless power. The system can already power televisions, cell phones and keep their special AA batteries fully charged all at the same time! To be honest, induction charging has been around for a while, as has wireless power transmission. Radio waves are wireless power, the pads you can buy to charge your cell phone, mouse or game controllers use wireless power, but this is a bit different. The ones we have now use nearfield induction and this blows it into a whole new proportion.
The problem with any of these systems, is the efficiency. Magnetic fields have to be relatively closeby to pick up other magnetic fields. The MIT researchers were able to power one 60 watt light bulb from 2 meters away but it was only 45 efficient. So they put in 133 watts to power a 60 watt bulb. Not awesome though according to the researchers, this system is 1 million times more efficient than the ones already on the market. and the CEO of WiTricity says it's 1,000 times more efficient than a battery!.
Burning Stuff With 2000F Solar Power!!
In a previous project I found a free tv and turned it into a giant solar scorcher. This shoots out a deadly beam of sunlight, that's hot enough to abuse food, melt metal and burn things you probably shouldn't. Today seemed like a good day to play with my Solar Scorcher. I positioned my frame and found the focal point, then added some concrete tiles as a base for my projects. Ok, I've got power, and I'll test it out with this piece of wood and when the light makes contact.
I've got instant fire. The sunlight at this spot is around 2000 degrees Fahrenheit, enough to melt this spot of concrete into a glowing orange liquid. I'm curious to see what I can do with all this heat so I've filled a glass bottle with water and I'll punch a hole in the cap. It's incredible to see that the instant I focus my lens on the bottle, it starts smoking. Just a few moments later this water is so hot it's boiling, and I'm a little nervous the bottle might blow. Yep, there it goes. The glass pieces are melting and that's cool,.
But now I want to try this on some food. I'll get some hot dogs, and when they hit the beam they really do get hot. This might be a little well done for my taste, and I'm still hungry so let's try an egg. The egg is actually working very well. It's so reflective it doesn't burn as fast, and even my wife is interested. A little salt and pepper and it's tempting to try a bite. Ok, so I wasn't actually expecting to eat this, but it looks safe enough, and.

We covered the mobile home ceiling material. And just went right over it with the mud and did a little bit of the texture. And we went ahead and did a primer and a paint. And this is what it looks like. Then we went ahead and did the walls. Instead of ripping out the boarding, I applied the drywall tape and mud to seal up all of the.
Seams. And then I went through and did a texture with what tools I had on hand, just using drywall mud. Then I went through and painted them, once I was done.
