In a previous project I found a free tv and turned it into a giant solar scorcher. This shoots out a deadly beam of sunlight, that's hot enough to abuse food, melt metal and burn things you probably shouldn't. Today seemed like a good day to play with my Solar Scorcher. I positioned my frame and found the focal point, then added some concrete tiles as a base for my projects. Ok, I've got power, and I'll test it out with this piece of wood and when the light makes contact.
I've got instant fire. The sunlight at this spot is around 2000 degrees Fahrenheit, enough to melt this spot of concrete into a glowing orange liquid. I'm curious to see what I can do with all this heat so I've filled a glass bottle with water and I'll punch a hole in the cap. It's incredible to see that the instant I focus my lens on the bottle, it starts smoking. Just a few moments later this water is so hot it's boiling, and I'm a little nervous the bottle might blow. Yep, there it goes. The glass pieces are melting and that's cool,.
But now I want to try this on some food. I'll get some hot dogs, and when they hit the beam they really do get hot. This might be a little well done for my taste, and I'm still hungry so let's try an egg. The egg is actually working very well. It's so reflective it doesn't burn as fast, and even my wife is interested. A little salt and pepper and it's tempting to try a bite. Ok, so I wasn't actually expecting to eat this, but it looks safe enough, and.
Even my kids are anxious to try. Surprisingly, it's pretty good. Alright, let's see what else this will do. I'll try burning a penny, and, wow, it melted. How about a stack of pennies Yep, they're nothing but liquid metal now, and I'm thinking that slag in the mixture must be what's left of the copper coating. It's only taking about 4 seconds to melt these, and melting metal is really great, but now I want to see something burst. I wonder what would happen to this egg It's spewing some kind of debris and smoking like crazy. I hear.
Some little pops and it's even forming some interesting growths. huh, Look at that. But no explosion. How about if I put a pop top on this bottle of water and let the pressure build up Yeah, that's what I'm looking for. Let's do that again. The lid is back on, and pressure is building. Awesome! Alright, the sun is setting and I've readjusted my Aframe. I'm just wondering if this would ignite gasoline. It does. Hopefully it goes without saying that this is very dangerous and you shouldn't try this at home. Well, I'm convinced there's.
An insane amount of power behind these lenses. If you'd like to see where I got this one, take a look at my tutorial on how I hacked it out of an old TV. This one boiled water in less than a minute, welded a nickel to concrete, and instantly torched any piece of wood in it's way. Well that was fun, but I'm still hungry so I'll put everything away and go get some real home cooking. That's it for now. If you liked this project, perhaps you'll like some of my others. Which Solar Panels to Use
Namaste Solar primarily installs from three manufacturers SunPower, Sharp and Kyocera. Your Sunpower panel and your Sanyo are you two high efficiency high end panels, so must power per square foot but also the most cost per watt as well. Those panels are very popular when you have very limited roof space and you want to maximize how much power you get on your roof. Sunpower also has the nice added benefit of an all black ascetic that you don't get with any other panels and that is really popular with homeowners.
Then your Sharp and Kyocera panels are your low efficiency but lower cost panels so those can really make sense when you have a lot of roof space in order to fit the solar system. So which one has the most bank for the buck Sharp or the Kyocera They are actually quite comparable, Sharp has their own racking system now, which is called SRS aestecally is nice because black frame system which sits low to the roof but sometimes you do not get the flexiblity with that system because of the low profile and.
Because it is a frame you need to have some margin of roof space around the system to work so you end up losing a little bit of real estate with that system that you can't go over attic vents and those kinds of things. Where as with a panel like Kyocera can be used with standard 3rd party mounting systems such as Unirack or ProSolar and those tend to be pretty flexible and can often clear some roof obstructions and go right to the ridge of the roof or gutter of the roof.
Are Solar Panels Going To 300 Watts Soon
Right now solar panels are around the 200 watt range. Are they ever Going To 300 Watts is a question I asked John Shaw project engineer of Bella Energy. Absolutely, any manufacturer can do that right now. You shouldn't really look at how many watts a panel has rather how many watts per square foot can be attained. Behind you is a Sanyo 200, if you increase the foot print of that panel by 50 it is a 300 watt panel. The reality is what you need to be looking at to measure the level of progress of the.
Technology is how many watts per square foot. Instead of thinking will there ever be a 300 watt panel surely there will be even next year. To get at the point of your question is do you ever think we will be ever to achieve a 300 watt panel in 15 square feet And yes, I do. Right now standard efficiency panels are in the ballpark of about 12 watts per square foot, it ranges from 10 to 13. Standard efficiency panels Evergreens, Sharps, Kyocera, Shot , Suntech etc. Keep in mind this is the residential affordable panels, NASA works with panels that are about.
30 watts per square foot but you are talking a million bucks a panel. Then there are high efficiency panels of the ones we know of are SunPower and Sanyo. And Sunpower and Sanyo are approximately 15 watts per square foot. Both are very good products. Sanyo I believe has a little bit of an edge because they has an amorphous or thin film rap around the silicon cell which allows them to maintain high production in high heat. One more reason and I will tie this in. The Sanyo's are shipped with a minus 0 and a plus 5 percent so when you buy a 200 watt.
Sanyo panel you will get hypothetically in standard test conditions 75 degrees at sea level you will get 200 watts or up to 210 watts. All other panels including specifically Sunpower are or 5, so you could buy a 210 watt Sunpower cell and it could actually perform at 199 watts where you could buy a 200 watt Sanyo cell it could perform at 210 watts, but no less than 200 watts. So that and the fact the Sanyo's will out perform Sunpower apples to apples same azimuth and pitch in high heat because of this amorphous or thin film rap 10 in high heat peak days.
SolarCity Unveils Worlds Most Efficient Rooftop Solar Panel with more than 22 Module Efficiency.
The Sun provides endless energy, but the average solar cell panel can convert only 14 to 20 of the energy it collects into usable electricity. Now, American energy company SolarCity has built the world's most efficient rooftop solar panel, with a module efficiency exceeding 22 percent. The new SolarCity panel generates more power per square foot and harvests more energy over a year than any other rooftop panel in production, and will be the highest volume solar panel manufactured in the Western Hemisphere. SolarCity will begin producing the first modules in small quantities this month at its 100.
MW pilot facility, but the majority of the new solar panels will ultimately be produced at SolarCity's 1 GW facility in Buffalo, New York. SolarCity expects to be producing between 9,000 10,000 solar panels each day with similar efficiency when the Buffalo facility reaches full capacity. SolarCity's panel was measured with 22.04 percent modulelevel efficiency by Renewable Energy Test Center, a thirdparty certification testing provider for photovoltaic and renewable energy products. SolarCity's new panel is created via a proprietary process that significantly reduces the manufacturing cost relative to other highefficiency technologies, and it.
