Burning Stuff With 2000F Solar Power!!

In a previous project I found a free tv and turned it into a giant solar scorcher. This shoots out a deadly beam of sunlight, that's hot enough to abuse food, melt metal and burn things you probably shouldn't. Today seemed like a good day to play with my Solar Scorcher. I positioned my frame and found the focal point, then added some concrete tiles as a base for my projects. Ok, I've got power, and I'll test it out with this piece of wood and when the light makes contact.

I've got instant fire. The sunlight at this spot is around 2000 degrees Fahrenheit, enough to melt this spot of concrete into a glowing orange liquid. I'm curious to see what I can do with all this heat so I've filled a glass bottle with water and I'll punch a hole in the cap. It's incredible to see that the instant I focus my lens on the bottle, it starts smoking. Just a few moments later this water is so hot it's boiling, and I'm a little nervous the bottle might blow. But now I want to try this on some food. I'll get some hot dogs, and when they hit the beam they really do get hot. This might be a little well done for my taste, and I'm still hungry so let's try an egg. The egg is actually working very well. It's so reflective it doesn't burn as fast, and even my wife is interested. A little salt and pepper and it's tempting to try a bite. Ok, so I wasn't actually expecting to eat this, but it looks safe enough, and.

Energy 101 Solar PV

MR. All right, we all know that the sun's energy creates heat and light. But it can also be converted to make electricity, and lots of it. One technology is called solar photovoltaics or PV for short. You've probably seen PV panels around for years, but recent advancements have greatly improved their efficiency and electrical output. Enough energy from the sun hits the earth every hour to power the planet for an entire year. Here's how it works. You see, sunlight is made up of tiny packets of energy called photons.

These photons radiate out from the sun, and about 93 million miles later, they collide with a semiconductor on a solar panel here on Earth. It all happens at the speed of light. So the photons strike the cell, and their energy frees some electrons in the semiconductor material. The electrons create an electric current, which is harnessed.

More Sun For Less Money

We are sort of on the frontier of solar energy research. So everybody wants more energy from the rooftops the way you do that is to have more efficient solar cells. A photon from the sun is a little pack of energy. It comes down, gets absorbed, that creates a packet of energy and the material. Radiant House Raising The Roof

Today we installed the roof module onto Radiant House. We built the top module seperately from the rest of the house for two reasons. The first is that if it was all built as one piece it would be too tall to be put on trucks to be transported to Irvine.
