Solar Panel Electric Water Heater

Saving Energy with Solar Power Using a Solar Powered Water Heater

So what you see here is our water heater. And this water heater is a big one, because we want to store as much water as possible when we get the hot water from the sun. If you would use only a 10 gallon or a 20 gallon water heater, and we take a shower, then the water will be gone. So we use a big one because we want to store as much water as possible. And it's double insulated, so it has not the normal insulation, it's double insulated so.

It can store the hot water for at least 23 days before it gets cool. What we use in here, it's a little bit unusual because we use rain water in here. Many of you know that the water heater's really get problems when you have hot water because they get clogged up by the limestone, and they are, then you have to call a repair man or even throw it away, because nothing comes out there anymore. But when you use rain water, the rain water has no limestone in there. No lime, no hard particles. So this water heater is here for 12 years.

Now, 13 years now, and it will never clog up because rain water does not clog up a water heater. So that's a good thing. Another good thing is when you open it up on your faucet, the hot water you will not have the stains. When you use the rain water in your washing machine, then you only use a quarter of the detergent that you normally use because the detergent has not too soften your hard water. So, you save money there. And, as you know with a washing machine, you have the problem that the limestone is building up in there.

Too, and it clogs up your washing machine, and it gives stains in the machine and on your clothes. So, with rain water you don't have this problem. I only can recommend using a rain water catching system, and it's easy to do and it's not very expensive. Many states even supports the use of rain water in giving you a tax rebate on your rain water harvesting system. Here in Texas, we don't pay sales tax on it because when you tell your company you buy it from, the will cut out the sales tax, because Texas wants to have people use.

Saving Energy with Solar Power Using Solar Panels for Water Heaters

What you see here is a solar water heater. So totally different to photovoltaic or to solar electricity. This one is just using the sun to heat up water. And when you look close, I opened it up for you that you can see what's going on there. In here is just a copper pipe. And down there, this is a copper pipe. And on the top there, you see another copper pipe. So now the sun is shining on this whole thing and down here the water is cool and it gets warm because all these metal plates take the heat from the sun and feed.

It into these pipes you see behind there. So when the water gets warm, it goes up and then it feeds in this main pipe up there and there you have hot water. Down there it's still cool, up there it's hot. And there the pipe comes out and this pipe runs into our water heater and is heating the water in the water heater for free. So this thing here is not really sophisticated. You can buy it today much better systems with a higher efficiency. This one is in the moment 30 years old and works for 30 years. And without any problems.

Saving Energy with Solar Power Using Rainwater in a Water Heater

So, we see from back there that the pipe that comes from the water tank, from the rainwater tank, comes in here and then goes into this little pump. And this little pump has a pressure tank in here so that the pressure is always there. Because what we want is that when we open the faucet that the water runs out. Out there it was easy because, there, gravity was giving us the water. If you would be up there in the house or even here, it would be too high so the water would not run out. So we use this pump and this little pressure.

Tank that holds two gallons, that we always have pressure on the line. And from here the water comes out and, you see, it goes through a filter, and then it goes in our hot water tank and in our water tank, what we use for water, for hot water. And here it goes up to the other, to the shower. So, from here, all our hot water is run by rainwater. All our cold water is run by well water because we know our well water is safe has no pollution,.

And we can drink it, we can use it. So, we just thought we'd use the rainwater for the part that we don't drink and use the other part for the part we drink. But here, when you open that, if I find something to show you. That's what happens when you open the faucet. You have the pressure from the tank that gives you the same pressure that you are use to from your well water. This way you will never see a difference. But then you wash your hands up there with your soap, and you open up the warm water, you will see.

That the soap is really wonderful to wash your hands because its soft water and you will have a long time to get rid of the soap. So, you open the cold water, there comes the hot water and your soap is gone. So, it's a wonderful combination to use rainwater together with well water or with your normal water, because it does not clog up your pipes, your shower does not look that bad because there is no limestone, there is no calcium in that rainwater. So, it's a wonderful combination. And this tank like this you buy this for about.

Saving Energy with Solar Power Solar Powered Water Heaters

Also is that we heat our water with the sun and that's another reason we can use these batteries because you're water heater is costing you every month about at least 8 to 15 dollars. So, and that's a lot of electricity. And if we would run our water heater that you see here, if you would run it on normal electricity, what it's built for, then the batteries would not be enough. So what we have here, in front, you see a pipe going there. And outside you will see a solar water heater panel where the sun shines on it. We are catching the.

Sun and the hot water comes in here and feeds the normal water heater. That's a normal water heater like you have in your home but this one the electricity is turned off and the hot water comes from this pipe in there and runs in the other pipe out there back to the water heater and that's enough for the 2 of us with 1 panel to have this whole thing full with warm water. I have to say sometimes the water has only 85 or 90 degrees. Sometimes it has 100 and in summer sometimes we have even to cover our panel because it gets so.

Burning Stuff With 2000F Solar Power!!

In a previous project I found a free tv and turned it into a giant solar scorcher. This shoots out a deadly beam of sunlight, that's hot enough to abuse food, melt metal and burn things you probably shouldn't. Today seemed like a good day to play with my Solar Scorcher. I positioned my frame and found the focal point, then added some concrete tiles as a base for my projects. Ok, I've got power, and I'll test it out with this piece of wood and when the light makes contact.

I've got instant fire. The sunlight at this spot is around 2000 degrees Fahrenheit, enough to melt this spot of concrete into a glowing orange liquid. I'm curious to see what I can do with all this heat so I've filled a glass bottle with water and I'll punch a hole in the cap. It's incredible to see that the instant I focus my lens on the bottle, it starts smoking. Just a few moments later this water is so hot it's boiling, and I'm a little nervous the bottle might blow. Yep, there it goes. The glass pieces are melting and that's cool,.

But now I want to try this on some food. I'll get some hot dogs, and when they hit the beam they really do get hot. This might be a little well done for my taste, and I'm still hungry so let's try an egg. The egg is actually working very well. It's so reflective it doesn't burn as fast, and even my wife is interested. A little salt and pepper and it's tempting to try a bite. Ok, so I wasn't actually expecting to eat this, but it looks safe enough, and.

Even my kids are anxious to try. Surprisingly, it's pretty good. Alright, let's see what else this will do. I'll try burning a penny, and, wow, it melted. How about a stack of pennies Yep, they're nothing but liquid metal now, and I'm thinking that slag in the mixture must be what's left of the copper coating. It's only taking about 4 seconds to melt these, and melting metal is really great, but now I want to see something burst. I wonder what would happen to this egg It's spewing some kind of debris and smoking like crazy. I hear.

Some little pops and it's even forming some interesting growths. huh, Look at that. But no explosion. How about if I put a pop top on this bottle of water and let the pressure build up Yeah, that's what I'm looking for. Let's do that again. The lid is back on, and pressure is building. Awesome! Alright, the sun is setting and I've readjusted my Aframe. I'm just wondering if this would ignite gasoline. It does. Hopefully it goes without saying that this is very dangerous and you shouldn't try this at home. Well, I'm convinced there's.

An insane amount of power behind these lenses. If you'd like to see where I got this one, take a look at my tutorial on how I hacked it out of an old TV. This one boiled water in less than a minute, welded a nickel to concrete, and instantly torched any piece of wood in it's way. Well that was fun, but I'm still hungry so I'll put everything away and go get some real home cooking. That's it for now. If you liked this project, perhaps you'll like some of my others. Solar Water Heater System

We install our gas boosted solar hot water system. The collector panels are mounted on the garage roof directly above the storage tank. The gas booster is adjustable so we can fine tune the hot water supply to maximise its efficiency. Getting the temperature right means you don't have to mix in too much cold water. Once it is up and running, the system is bled and we are ready to roll. The panels are on the north face of the house and angled at about 9 degrees. Because we are installing the storage tank inside the garage it will need to be flumed out into.

The atmosphere to comply with safety regulations. This is part of our gas boosted hot water system installation. It's called the water guardian and what it does, when you turn on the hot tap instead of allowing the cold water to run out first before the hot water arrives it recycles it back into the storage tank. Just press the button, it comes on we wait for it to stop There we are, piping hot water strait away. This device saves 16000 litres of water per annum per outlet. Worth doing.

Using solar power to purify water

This technology is the product of six years of research on solar powered clean water systems at MIT. Each system is optimally configured from low cost, commercially available components using our analytical tools and software. This ensures that customers receive the best systems for their locations, input water chemistries and daily demands. Each system uses a microcomputer so it operates effectively under varying conditions automatically. This enabled end user operation with limited attention. To demonstrate the effectiveness outside of the lab, the MIT team, with the support of the Kellogg Foundation, installed a.

Prototype system in a remote Mayan farming village in the center of Mexico's Yucatan peninsula. This unit fits into a small garden shed, however it can produce enough drinking water for a village of about 450 people. The system can purify captured rain water, pond water, or brackish well water. All these have substantial dissolved solids and biological contamination. The water produced meet international water quality standards. The system is configured from easily serviced or replaced components. It is powered by solar panels. Water purification is an energy intensive process. Solar powered.
