We get asked about the battery question almost on every job, and we tell them to wait. And I tell them there's some really exciting technologies that are coming down the pipe. There's flow batteries, potentially, high energy density flow batteries. There's nanotech enhanced lithium ion that's coming. There's liquid salt batteries that are coming. There's a number potentially, ultracapacitors. Batteries have a bad reputation, but what we're working on are supercapacitors, and supercapacitors you can think of as a charge storage device like a battery, except it charges and discharges 100 to 1000 times faster.
A supercapacitor is one which combines the best attributes of both. If you think about all the electronic devices you have, right now, every time you need one, you realize, oh, I forgot to charge it up. But imagine if you could take that same device, plug in the wall for 30 seconds or a minute, and be ready to go. There's a number of really exciting battery technologies all competing to fill the super battery space, or the battery of the future the battery that can power your whole house, last for 10 to 20 years, and not cost you too much.
That battery's coming, and it's not quite here yet. Cost of lithium ion has dropped precipitously over the last several years, but it's not quite there yet. And so we tell our customers to wait. The day will come, and it's not too many years in the future when you'll be able to power your life off of solar, not just during the daytime when the sun's shining, but also at night. You'll be able to put a battery in your garage that's the size of a refrigerator that'll run your whole house for a couple days.

Rehome was designed to be a netzero energy usage home. It uses passive energy saving strategies, integrated with highly efficient and smart active systems. 9 teams of Illinois engineering students worked with the architecture team to make this possible. With walls rated R45 and the roof and floor both rated R60, the Rehome is extremely well insulated. The layout and orientation of the Rehome are core components of the passive design concept. In order to maximize solar gains, windows are placed mostly on the south faade. Shading devices are utilized to control daylight. ReHome has been engineered as a smart home.
It is outfitted with over 100 sensors and dozens of embedded microcontrollers. This allows control and monitoring of everything from the power consumption of a single device plugged into an outlet, to water usage and grey water availability, to temperature, humidity and carbon dioxide levels. A powerful controls system was required. This would give information and control to the user, in a single, unified space. The Engineering team developed the recontrol user interface. This interface uses web technologies and the convenient iPad touchscreen. A database logs all data displayed on the interface. The recontrol portal gives.
The user useful ataglance data such as indoor and outdoor temperatures, a graph of overall home power consumption vs. production, and has links to other pages, which control various subsystems. The heating, ventilating, and air conditioning system utilized in the ReHome is a Conditioning Energy Recovery Ventilator or CERV. The CERV is an airsource heat pump specifically designed for wellinsulated, airtight homes. The recontrol HVAC page gives the user access to the CERV controls and status information. The Rehome has been outfitted with a photovoltaic array that provides 6.7 kilowatts during peak sun. The array utilizes.
18.5 percent efficient crystalline panels. The panels collapse flat for transport. The solar monitoring page provides a user with valuable power production and consumption information. ReHome is equipped with a fully automated, power conserving, ledbased lighting system, and a power monitoring system capable of recording the usage of each device in the home. Each region of the ReHome floor plan may be clicked to retrieve usage information specific to that area of the home. Single devices are represented by globes on the floor plan. A lit globe shows that that device is consuming power. A user can select from specific.

Welcome to PEAK. Welcome to West Virginia. The Mountain State. The heart of rugged, lush Appalachia. Within these mountains lies a rich history, both of land and people. A source of life, and a way of life. West Virginia, the mountain state. And now, the energy state. Preserving energy with Appalachian knowledge Welcome to PEAK Appalachian lifestyle. Sustainability. Modern technology. A fusion of tradition and innovation, nature and engineering. This is the basis of the Peak house. And it all starts from the fulcrum. Living in the isolation of the Appalachian mountains, early settlers came to appreciate.
The simple joy of intimate gatherings. The fulcrum became the focal point for enjoying the company of family and friends. By separating the house into two sections, the fulcrum drives the heart of the house the human living experience. A place to relax, and a place to connect. Inside the social area, kitchen, dining, and living areas are defined by usage, not by walls. The result is sense of freedom and openness designed to complement the Appalachian environment and enhance social interaction. Around the corner, the private area features a guest bedroom with a shared bathroom across.
The hallway, as well as a master bedroom and master bath. Tucked behind the fulcrum, the bedrooms provide a quiet place to relax and rest after a long day. By monitoring temperature changes, humidity, power consumption and other vital statistics, the home automation system within the Fulcrum simplifies the task of maximizing and conserving energy. With the addition of a Fitbit wristband, The system can also track the residents BMI, weight, and overall health routines seamlessly. From a tablet or other mobile device, a user can gain instant feedback on all aspects of.
Energy consumption and health and make any necessary changes, all with just a few taps on the screen. Above the central nervous system of the house, a passive ventilation system utilizes the unique design and shape of the fulcrum to condition the house. For additional heating or cooling, a zoned HVAC system working in tandem with the central server allows for precise control over temperature settings. Structural insulated panels, behind a logcabin exterior, provide the house with modern insulation all while capturing the ruggedness of a log style home. A green roof, along with a living wall and a greenhouse combine to enhance the house's.
Insulating properties while providing lifestyle and environmental benefits. Apart from conserving energy, PEAK captures energy from the sun to reduce reliance on the public grid. An array of solar panels and water heater on the roof, together with the house's energy conserving features, allow users to be fully selfsufficient by providing the energy to power the house and heat the water. This is PEAK. Inspired by heritage. Designed for comfort. Driven by innovation. Welcome to our energy future. The future of a way of life, and a source of life. Welcome to PEAK.

State Senator Joe Benning A State of Green Short
Industrial wind happens to be the darling of the present administration, and there are political connections there that are very uncomfortable. that are very but that drive is the centerpiece now of what Vermonters are calling renewable energy. And unfortunately, those companies have the power to come in to small towns, offer large sums of money or big tax breaks and that entices people to have them put in. But if you climb up to the top of Lowell mountain I don't know if you've done that yet Eric We have. Senator Alright, well if you climb up there and you have a look around,.
That's there for the millenium, what we've just done there. And to me, that's my birthright. That's not a situation that I think should be handed to my kids and my grandkids. It's just not worth it to buy power that has to be subsidized by the taxpayer and the ratepayer. This is definitely out of the context of what Vermont is. It may be perfectly appropriate along the Santa Fe Trail through Kansas or Nebraska and places where you can go for miles and miles and miles and never see another soul.
But Vermont is a very small place, geographically. What we value and cherish most are these green hills, that's why people come here. And when you change the character of that image, the impact.it's much greater than any of us can understand right now. Someday we're going to look around and wonder what led us to this, where we're having literally people coming to the border, one side putting up a tower that will interfere with the other side and they are threatening to cut off the water supply. That makes no sense.
