How Induction Cooking Works

Many of you may not be familiar with induction cooking, so let's review how induction works. Induction cooking is a two part system. The first part is a coil of copper wire like this one. When electric current is passed through the coil, it creates an electromagnetic field of energy. All by itself, nothing happens. The control flashes a letter F telling you that it failed to detect a pan. Electromagnetic energy is around us every day in the form of AM and FM radio, cell phones, wireless laptops, microwaves, infrared, and visible light.

The second part of this twopart system is the pan. Now you need to know that not all pans will work on an induction cooktop. Pans that are a hundred percent copper, hundred percent aluminum, or nonmagnetic stainless steel will not work. The bottom of the pan must have some iron content. The easiest way to tell if your pans have an iron base core is to use a magnet. If the magnet sticks to the bottom of the pan then that pan will work on your induction cooktop. The bottoms of many pans are of a sandwich construction like this one.

Often stainless steel inside and out but may have an aluminum core in the center. Those pains will work if the stainless steel is magnetic. Just check it with a magnet. Now let's see this in action. I'll place the pan on a cooktop with water in it and turn it on high. If this were a traditional radiant cooktop, the entire element would heat and the entire surface would glow red, but not with induction. The coil below the ceramic surface does not heat and will not glow. All the electromagnetic energy passes through.

Saving Energy with Solar Power Using a Solar Powered Water Heater

So what you see here is our water heater. And this water heater is a big one, because we want to store as much water as possible when we get the hot water from the sun. But when you use rain water, the rain water has no limestone in there. No lime, no hard particles. So this water heater is here for 12 years.

Now, 13 years now, and it will never clog up because rain water does not clog up a water heater. So that's a good thing. Another good thing is when you open it up on your faucet, the hot water you will not have the stains. When you use the rain water in your washing machine, then you only use a quarter of the detergent that you normally use because the detergent has not too soften your hard water. So, you save money there. And, as you know with a washing machine, you have the problem that the limestone is building up in there.

Too, and it clogs up your washing machine, and it gives stains in the machine and on your clothes. So, with rain water you don't have this problem. I only can recommend using a rain water catching system, and it's easy to do and it's not very expensive. Many states even supports the use of rain water in giving you a tax rebate on your rain water harvesting system. Here in Texas, we don't pay sales tax on it because when you tell your company you buy it from, the will cut out the sales tax, because Texas wants to have people use.

First, we start off with the sine wave an AC sine wave typically three phase power or we can also use a single phase power as well. So, we take that we send it through a bridge rectifier or series of diodes basically convert that AC into DC. So, it starts off and its a sine wave. Once it goes through the rectifier it basically flips all the bottom half's up and makes DC, direct current. We store that.

In these large capacitors sometimes we call them water towers and that basically is our source for what we are going to use to generate a synthetic AC sine wave out to a motor. Then, we take that DC and we go through a series of transistors which are basically electronic switches and we use that to create a synthetic sine wave, where we can vary the voltage and the frequency in order to get a motor to spin at a given rate. If we keep the ratio of the voltage to the frequency consistent, then we can produce constant torque throughout.
