Hi! I'm Minnesota Miles, and welcome to the University of Minnesota's Solar House. The Solar House is equipped with solar panels across the roof. They provide energy to all aspects of the house like the oven, electricity and water heating. The other awesome thing about the house is that it's set up like any other suburban home. You've got the deck, the grass and all you're missing is the white picket fence! One important aspect of the design of the Solar House is its icon shape. Icon, meaning iconic as in if you were to ask a child what a house looked like,.
He or she would draw something that looks similar to this.unless the child were an Eskimo. Students from colleges across the University contributed to the project. Architecture students helped design the overall look and feel of the house. Institute of Technology students brought their expertise in engineering systems to make it a fully functional house. College of Continuing Education students in Construction Management are working handson with the building and construction. Now the students will take the Solar House to Washington, D.C. to compete in the Solar Decathlon against twenty other colleges.
White House Brings Back Solar Panels
Really offsets it for what it's worth at least its symbolic we remember that back now gosh the 30 five years ago I think it was jimmy carter put a solar panels on the roofer love the White House and ronald reagan just to show our what a a huge a whole he was and maybe this was the first time ladies and gentlemen you know tonight a I wanna plug Chris haces documentary on global warming and what are the things that we've been saying on this program and I think he.
Makes his point the in the in the peace tonight is that denial of global warming has become one of those a.m. cultural touchstones for the Conservatives and I I would imagine they're all reagan pulling down those solar panels from the white house was the beginning of this or at least if not the beginning the first sort of milestone down this road that any that somehow girl eh I mean I really think it's what it comes down to its fammi for the conservative mind to to want to get power from the Sun.
And so he pulled down are those solar panels and after three years in essentially promising parent to put solar plant als back on top at the white house as a sign at the president's a commitment to renewable energy a white house official who asked not to be identified because the installation is in process wrote in an email the project part of a part of an energy retrofit that will improve the overall energy efficiency are the white house so a panels going back up and I guess the only come back down if Ted Cruz gets his way.
But they will be on the a white house at least for the next couple years it's a.m. at least it says uh somewhat symbolic but to take it for what it will forty well I'm sure Pinto Obama says the Keystone to go up well the implications of that are tacky which I really it's more apt to say they'll be coming back down after we hear from my rush limbaugh and the those in congress kisses a far more proof forget of course that you know you use solar panels who but a.
Vinyl NetZero Solar Decathlon SciArc CalTech DALE House
Today, I'm representing the SciArcCalTech DALE Dynamic Augmented Living Environment our entry into the Solar Decathlon 2013 competition DALE is Dynamic Augmented Living Environment the two modules move, but also the interior reconfigures and so we can keep the house small and condition a very small space and then open up the building to allow California to become our air conditioner during most of the year We have vinyl wrapup basically a PVC wrap that wraps the entire building. It becomes both our roof and our wall structure. All of our indoor and outdoor furniture is made to withstand both indoor and.
Outdoor uses. In thinking about what materials went into DALE we had to obviously consider USER durability, to EASE of construction, to cost. The vinyl was an amazing material for us, we found that we could use in many different things the roofing material becomes the wall material or the exterior cladding material a very important consideration for DALE because it is a moving structure. All of our interior flooring is a soft vinyl easytoclean, soft on the feet for when you're walking through DALE. Very durable. Durability being a Life Cycle Assessment.
Factor because the longer it lasts the less often you have to replace it and, if you have to replace it less, the less it has to be manufactured.and so forth. In terms of Life Cycle Assessment our plumbing is all CPVC, which is long lifetime very low energy use and making it a very good life cycle END End of Life. In thinking through the materials of DALE we really tried to think through how you can make it easiest on the environment. DALE is basically optimize to save energy.
And then. MATERIALLY, we also have a reflective white vinyl exterior that doesn't absorb heat. We have the moving canopies which shade the module also do solar gain on two of the main faces of the building. So, all of that helps us to keep the keep the temperature COOL inside. Because most houses are static they have a HARD line coming in and we had to face the challenge of using a FLEXIBLE line. So, we're using flexible tubing that comes in through our cable carriers as well as well all of our wiring and things water are drawn through the cable carriers. which organize and.
How to make a walking robot at home
Hello there here is a walking robot. You have seen these tutorials but nobody has explained how to make it. Here is a step by step process of making it at home. You need a motor, high torque low speed you can use servo, but I have used the door opening mechanism of an old CD player. I cut it out, then take the pulley and rubber band out and take the big gear out. Through the big gear I pass a iron wire and glue it. Cut empty refill pieces and glue that.
With the shaft and the gear. Pass it again through its same position and another side put one more refill which will work like a bush. now bend shaft both side 90 degree and turn it again cut the extra length to make it a bicycle paddle like look. Now from the center of the shaft about 10cm make a hole and push a iron wire. Put both side two small refill pipes. Now the closest distance from the shaft is 5cm and the longest distance is 9cm. now you need another iron wire to make a leg.
Make a slot of 4.5cm like this and about 9cm away make another loop. thus you have to make two legs. You have to the leg into the mechanism like this for this I have used some pen and refills. I put the sketch pen empty there and two refills here and so that it can freely move. If you power it up you can see its freely moving. Now bend the leg little bit wider here and cut the extra length at that end you can see I make it a loop.
Now to make that feet, take again some wire loop it to make a 1cm long and then make a U of 6cm wide such you have to make two feet. Screw that feet with the leg tightly in such a way that it should stand on single a leg. You have to do with the other leg too now all that moving junctions you put some grease or Vaseline. Now you have to do walking test. power it up with an external 3V supply with thin wires and check how it is walking.
Solar Ship Inc. in Brantford
Music gtgt Jay Godsall I'm Jay Godsall I'm CEO of Solar Ship Inc. At Solar Ship we build hybrid aircraft and they're essentially buoyantly assisted bush planes. So if you take a bush plane base and you take an airship top and squish it flat, you get a nice big flat surface where you can put a solar panel on top, you get a huge surface for a wing lift and you develop a very heavy lift bush plane. Brantford offered us a really good industrial base. It's right in the middle of one of.
The most industrialized places in the world. There's a proximity to what we call the triangle, so there's a huge tech base in Kitchener, Waterloo, Cambridge, big manufacturing base. Just a huge amount of suppliers. For a small company it's a big expense to move from Barrie to Brantford. The infrastructure attracted us at first and then the talent. You don't really know, you sometimes hear there's a lot of talent, a lot of mechanical, electrical and entrepreneurial talent around but you don't know until you get here. You get a community of aviators and electrical people and mechanical people who don't just.
Know how to do things, they want to help you. That's a huge difference for us. Our partnership with the City starts with the Municipal airport and because they've got a big aviation community that builds things, they have a lot of people who invent and build new types of aircraft, so they're used to seeing new experimental aircraft and they're very open minded to us. That's really important to us. They give us a lot of space. They help us out. We need to be around people who are openminded to expansion and ambitious ideas.
Experience a 220 sq ft tiny home OffBeat Spaces tutorial
Good morning. Welcome to our tiny house. Our tiny barn on our tiny farm here in New England was built last year by a group of students from Yestermorrow Design Build School up in Warren, Vermont. We love it. MUSIC PLAYING The students that designed it and built it, they didn't go crazy trying to pack a million little things in. It's open, it's airy. So when you're living in a very small house, you don't feel constricted. So this is the kitchen and the dining room and the living room.
One of the things that the students were trying to achieve was, even though this is a somewhat small house 227 square feet it still feels pretty big. I've been in here with 15 or 20 people, and believe it or not, it's not that crowded. You can see the light fixtures are pretty interesting salvaged plumbing parts. I don't think that water comes out of those. I hope not. It's got a full oven setup, salvaged steel backsplash. There's a nice set of drawers. There's cabinets above. Routed directly into the shelves above the sink are.
Drainage holes, so we can put our clean dishes here, and they drain right into the sink a nice way to save space. Here's the bathroom. We've got a little sink, shower. The floor and bench where the toilet are are all made of rotresistant wood, and there's a floor drain. So the whole room is actually the shower. The bedroom I think it's just a classic small house bedroom. The bed is up a little bit higher, so you've got plenty of storage underneath drawers and a big hatch in the back.
But it's not up so high that you have to climb up to get it. Again, this is one of those choices that they made that I think is so wonderful. It's a generous space. There's plenty of headroom, and you feel comfortable in there. So this is an old Japanese technique for finishing the exterior of the building. They took cedar boards and, using a blow torch, they charred them until they were black. And then, they scraped off the residue. And then, they put a light coat of a natural oil on that.
It gives it an amazing, rich brown color. And also, that charring seals the wood in, and it makes it essentially weatherproof. We've been really curious about creative ways to heat small spaces. Inside these hay bales is wood chips and sawdust and a little bit of manure. We've got a pipe going in. It loops around and around and around. There's about 600 feet of pipe in there. And then, it comes back out again. We haven't hooked up the pump yet, but we hooked it up temporarily the other day, and the water that.
Came out burned me. It's 150degree water coming out of this thing. So we think a pile like this could easily heat a tiny house. We were looking to make an investment in energy. What we've bought, in a lot of ways, is people power. And that means having family and friends come, people come to help out on the farm and visit. For us, it's this energy of being able to host people, to have people come and participate in our little experiment here. Love home and design Make sure to subscribe to SpacesTV on YouTube.
