In a previous project I found a free tv and turned it into a giant solar scorcher. This shoots out a deadly beam of sunlight, that's hot enough to abuse food, melt metal and burn things you probably shouldn't. Today seemed like a good day to play with my Solar Scorcher. I positioned my frame and found the focal point, then added some concrete tiles as a base for my projects. Ok, I've got power, and I'll test it out with this piece of wood and when the light makes contact.
I've got instant fire. The sunlight at this spot is around 2000 degrees Fahrenheit, enough to melt this spot of concrete into a glowing orange liquid. I'm curious to see what I can do with all this heat so I've filled a glass bottle with water and I'll punch a hole in the cap. It's incredible to see that the instant I focus my lens on the bottle, it starts smoking. Just a few moments later this water is so hot it's boiling, and I'm a little nervous the bottle might blow. Yep, there it goes. The glass pieces are melting and that's cool,.
But now I want to try this on some food. I'll get some hot dogs, and when they hit the beam they really do get hot. This might be a little well done for my taste, and I'm still hungry so let's try an egg. The egg is actually working very well. It's so reflective it doesn't burn as fast, and even my wife is interested. A little salt and pepper and it's tempting to try a bite. Ok, so I wasn't actually expecting to eat this, but it looks safe enough, and.
Even my kids are anxious to try. Surprisingly, it's pretty good. Alright, let's see what else this will do. I'll try burning a penny, and, wow, it melted. How about a stack of pennies Yep, they're nothing but liquid metal now, and I'm thinking that slag in the mixture must be what's left of the copper coating. It's only taking about 4 seconds to melt these, and melting metal is really great, but now I want to see something burst. I wonder what would happen to this egg It's spewing some kind of debris and smoking like crazy. I hear.
Some little pops and it's even forming some interesting growths. huh, Look at that. But no explosion. How about if I put a pop top on this bottle of water and let the pressure build up Yeah, that's what I'm looking for. Let's do that again. The lid is back on, and pressure is building. Awesome! Alright, the sun is setting and I've readjusted my Aframe. I'm just wondering if this would ignite gasoline. It does. Hopefully it goes without saying that this is very dangerous and you shouldn't try this at home. Well, I'm convinced there's.
An insane amount of power behind these lenses. If you'd like to see where I got this one, take a look at my tutorial on how I hacked it out of an old TV. This one boiled water in less than a minute, welded a nickel to concrete, and instantly torched any piece of wood in it's way. Well that was fun, but I'm still hungry so I'll put everything away and go get some real home cooking. That's it for now. If you liked this project, perhaps you'll like some of my others. DIY Solar Panel System Cost
The total of the system and materials was $22K. I ended up spending about another $1,800 in permit fees and a structural engineer and $400 for an electrician, several hundred dollars for a guy to come help me out for the two afternoons he spent with me. Xcel Energy gave me $16,538 rebate. Fix cost based on the number of kilowatts you are installing and has nothing to do with how much you pay the permit office or the electrician. My final cost after rebate was $7,237. I started my research in solar probably about a year before I actually installed it went.
And got a couple of bids from some of the local solar people both from contractors that my friends have used as well as just searching the internet and while talking to one of the guys I find of developed a good feeling from him, and I asked the question Would it be possible to do some of the work myself and kind of learn along the way he said Sure I absolutely support the doityourselfer DIY so I said why don't you throw me bids, what it would cost just come home and have solar one day and what it would cost to have.
It done where I do some or all the work myself. And throw them both to me and I said let's try the second one. The guys name is Steve Cross from Sun Spot Solar. I gave him my electric bills and said this is how much I think I need to generate and he said I agree and lets do these types of panels 180 watts each, you will need some where around 19 to 22 we figured out 21 fit pretty well. So I went and got all the permit information from Golden, filled it out. He came by 12.
Hour one day he type all the Xcel application on the internet and I kind of ran the process and when I had a question I would just send him an email and he helped me out. I think in parallel we order the equipment he dropped off in my driveway. Then one of his installers came out and helped me for two afternoons and I pretty much myself put in the whole rack system on the roof and the installer came out and helped me kind of a two man job carrying the panels up, putting the panels down and bracketing them down.

Solar Panels for Morgan Cottage Lets AmberGreen Solar Panels
Well the first solar panels investment we had was actually a cottage in Wales which we have that let out My wife turned around to me at the start and said what on earth are you doing spending has about 10,000 pounds investing on solar panels and then she saw the first paycheck that we got for 864 pounds and she said what's that for and I said well that's the payment from the solar panels We looked into getting two solar panel systems, one for our own home and then.
We've to had decided to invest here at pretty much the same time so here we've we've gone to the solar panels again a 6kw system catalyst system and we've gone for underfloor heating and electric underfloor heating and again with your immersion heating so this is effectively an electric house couple with that very, very, well insulated, and I think you, know you gotta have the two working hand in hand, so we have had the first winter, yet it's worked pretty well during the summer but we haven't had that much call.
On heat but it's certainly produce enough hot water after the family who live there so yeah, well find out and it will be a bit over of an experiment this first the first winter with the house being lived in You are always trying to identify your unique selling point, I think if you can sell to people that actually you're coming to a very thermally efficient home, for every bit of electricity is generated this is less of that that fuel bill so you know they don't have to pay for heating water heating and heating the house.
Solar powered air conditioning
Music playing Narrator Over 50 percent of the greenhouse gas emissions you produce in your home are generated by heating, air conditioning and hot water. In other words keeping your home warm in winter, cool in summer with nice hot water on tap is emitting 2.5 to 5 tonnes of greenhouse gas emissions each year. It also contributes a hefty amount to your electricity bill, between 50 to 60 percent. CSIRO has invented a new solar air conditioning system for Australian homes. This technology solution will reduce Australia's emissions, reduce your energy.
Bills and reduce our demand for electricity and gas. If every home in Australia installed our solar cooling technology it would be the equivalent of saving 15 mega tonnes of CO2 or taking 3.5 million cars off the road. CSIRO's solar air conditioning is an innovative three in one technology that provides hot water, cooling and heating. It uses only a fraction of the electricity of current systems and halves greenhouse gas emissions. The process begins with a typical solar hot water system. Water is heated by solar panels and stored in the hot water tank.
This solar hot water can then be used throughout the home, reducing the need for gas or electricity. A portion of the hot water is diverted into CSIRO's new solar air conditioning unit, which is divided into two compartments. The hot water enters a heat exchanger in the first compartment of the unit. Similar to a car radiator the heat exchanger uses the hot water to heat outside air that has been drawn into the first compartment through the vent. At the same time outside air is also being drawn into the second compartment into a desiccant wheel.
The desiccant wheel is the most critical part of the system. It is used to dry out the air before it goes into the house. Slowly turning the desiccant material in the wheel continuously absorbs moisture in the second compartment and then the absorbent material dries out in the first compartment. The desiccant material is dried out using the hot dry air generated by the heat exchanger. This air is then exhausted outside the home. The dry air from the desiccant wheel flows through an indirect evaporative cooler which creates a stream of cool dry air.
Solahart Customer Testimonial Finnegans Family
The Solahart products that we we have, we have a hot water service that we've had for about 10 years now, 11 years. When our electric hot water system died we just thought it was a nobrainer to pop that in. And the solar electricity we've had on the roof probably only about eight months now and yeah the best thing we've ever done. We were averaging with the six people in the house about $1,200 a quarter in electricity to now it's sitting around about between three and four hundred.
Depending on what time of the year You know a 75 reduction in our overall electricity bill arrangements is massive that's a huge amount of money in a back pocket every quarter. You hear lot of stories about solar products, particularly, that don't necessarily produce the amount of electricity that the salesman says that it will. Our does. And, we've had really no issues. We've got a really really good product that I have great faith in, that is going to save me huge amount of money in the long term and the big payoff is that we.
How to Supplement Solar Energy with a Wind Turbine
Here it is on the evening of December 22nd, the day after the Winter Solstice. And the downside of the Winter Solstice it it's a very dark and gloomy time of year. and so there's just not a lot of solar production. It's just been really dark and gloomy all day. and actually cleared up a little in the evening, but. To off set some of that winter production,.er, some of that winter need. Sorry about the wind Let me turn out of the wind My ultimate goal is to be able to run, the entire house and our cars and everything, off grid, indefinitely.
But,. I can do that in theory, 9months out of the year but darn, December, January and February are too dark and gloomy and there's just not enough sun to do it all during those times. So I'm offsetting the solar production with a wind turbine experimenting with this. I've just kind of hastily thrown up with jumper cables run it to a gridtie inverter that I've got up here. 1000 watt gridtie inverter. Which feeds directly back into the house. It works great! The only problem is it's not that windy here. Um, but right now it's pretty windy.
So it's been making a few watts today. I've seen it as high as 45 watts, which is actually kind of lousy. If this was up another 20 feet, it would probably make 10x that, so 400 watts maybe. And that's pretty significant, especially if it's running all day and night. So anyway. We can't really depend. I would ideally like to put it on my housetop. And actually put turbines up there. Maybe even 4 or 5 of them. All work together. But the neighborhood, the way it is, that's frowned upon.
VERY STRONGLY, so. Oh well. I don't want to upset the neighbors. I want to make this experiment work with still pleasing everyone else. Without anyone noticing that I'm saving energy. So. Anyway. That's my experiment in Wind and Solar. So. I'll have to come up with another way to make some power. A renewable way. I don't want to burn wood. I don't want to burn gas. We've already canceled our natural gas service and we don't buy gasoline anymore everything's electric now. So. That's my experiment. In renewable energy.
